Tutorial - How to Disable Word Verification on Blogger

Before I begin my tutorial I would like to start with an icicle photograph from my deck this morning.  I hope no neighbors were looking out as I was on the deck in my flannel jammies flashing my camera before the sun was quite up.  They are probably used to that kind of behavior from me I suppose.

Yes, it is Winter in Wyoming again.  I don't mind so much this time of year as I know it won't last too long.  We've really had a mild winter.  Isn't it beautiful here today?

OK, now on to some technical details...

As I mentioned a few days ago, the Word Verification feature is MUCH more difficult lately.  The letters are smooshed together and mixes of black and white.  I have trouble distinguishing an ol from a d for instance.

I took the word verification feature off my blog some time ago.  I'm not saying that everyone should do that but I've not had any real problems.  I also removed the comment moderation feature so that your comments on my blog should show up right away.  That may have been a questionable choice on my part but I'm wild that way.  I've had a few comments that were spam, but they were kind of entertaining.  They usually have a word or two in them that coincides with my post, enough that I struggle to make sense of it, but the sentences are usually a big strange.  When I click on the link of the person who left the message (I ALWAYS do that, by the way.) I find an advertisement.  I just delete the comment at that point.  If I ever get vulgar comments I suppose I will reinstate the comment moderation feature.

When I posted on the trouble I was having with reading the Word Verification words on other's blogs I learned that I was certainly not the only one annoyed by the changes.  I received a comment from Trisha that she didn't like it but she couldn't figure out how to disable it.  I was kind of baffled because when I disabled mine, it was easy.  I decided to go back to remember how I did it so that I could tell Trisha.  That is when I discovered that with the new Blogger interface that option isn't displayed anymore.  I've no idea why that is gone but this morning I whipped up a quick tutorial on how to get around that problem.

1.  When logged onto your own blog site, click Design.

2. Click on the little Settings Wheel and scroll down to choose Old Blogger Interface.

3.  Once you are at the old interface, choose Settings.

4.  Click on Comments.

5.  Scroll down on that screen and you will find this question regarding word verification.  As the saying goes, "Just Say No!"  I mean, if you want, that is.  I'm not going to judge you if you wish to continue requiring the word verification feature.  I am sure you have your reasons.

6.  Oh my!  I almost forgot, you MUST scroll on down and click SAVE SETTINGS!  That SAVE feature is something I have learned the hard way.  Did I ever tell you about the time Mike used my phone to snap a photo of me with the singer, Michael Martin Murphey?  He had his arm around me!  I LOVED his music as a teenager and the 15 yr. old in me was sooooo excited about that moment!  My brother was also a Michael Martin Murphey fan and I was totally planning to send that photo to him to rub it in that he'd had his arm around me!  Well, Mike handed the camera back to me and I could see that the photo was very cool.  I did NOT touch SAVE, though, and I lost the photo!  Anyway, lesson learned.  I don't think my brother believes me but I really, really did have that photo!  ANYWAY, please select the save button.

7.  When all is well, simply go back to the top of the screen and click on Try the updated Blogger interface and you are good to go!

Rr

If you have been keeping up with the ABC's of Bible Memorization you are definitely on the downhill slope.  Yay!  Remember, anyone who lets me know they've memorized all of the verses will receive a handmade gift from me, just to show you how happy I am for you!

If you've not even begun, not to worry, you can still catch up.  I think most of us are capable of memorizing a lot more than we think we can.  Why not give it a try?

We are on the letter R this week...

Joel 2:13 Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love…

The Small and the Tall of It

Recently I was riding in the car with Sam and we passed a middle school just after dismissal.  Sam was looking at all those kids and asked, "Was I ever really that small?"  Sam is probably 6'3" now, maybe more but he doesn't want me to measure him.  At any rate, he's tall!

But the answer, Sam, is yes.  You were as small as those kids and even smaller.

I still remember.

Yesterday was a simply sweet day.  I went over to pick up Maria and Cordelia for a morning out.  First, though, Cordy let me know that it was her "pretend birthday".  So, we went up to her sweet little girl room and ate pretend birthday cake and then I sang "Happy Pretend Birthday Dear Cordelia".  She was pleased but needed to rest for a minute before we headed out.

We then went to search for vintage treasures for Wyoming Rose Boutique.  We found some new dandies.  Maria will clean them and look for any needed repairs and they will soon be found here.  I also found a few new tops and after I clean them and look for any needed repairs they will soon be found in my closet.

Next, on to Hobby Lobby.  That place is like a magnet to us!  Cordelia was so pretty and sweet, she looked almost angelic.  As I put her in the shopping cart she sweetly said, "I'm going to toot in the cart!"  I think that is enough about that.

We always enjoy Hobby Lobby but it is really a dangerous place.  We both already have so many projects going, yet I found myself saying things like, "Maybe we need to learn to quill."  We had to step away from the quill display, realizing we needed to keep our focus.  I just love learning a new craft, but I was there on a specific mission.  I was looking for fancy strings or tiny yarns.  I'll update you on what that is for in the near future!

We took our PBJ's and ate a sack lunch at church with Mike.  After we ate Cordelia was feeling good!  There was some piano-playing, dancing and playing of follow-the-leader.

After dropping off the girls I took the lazy route home just to get a glimpse of the river.  It changes daily but I always feel a little refreshed just by seeing it.

Later in the afternoon Mike called.  His sister, Karen, and her husband, Gregg, were in town.  Sam came with me and we all met at the mall for some visiting time.  It's nice that we live within just a few hours of them now so we are able to get together more than we have in years past.

Mike had to work late last night so I worked on a project for Hospice.  I am on a committee to set up resources for pediatric hospice care.  I do not look forward to caring for a pediatric patient in a hospice setting but I want to be fully prepared when that day arrives.  Just reading the material makes me weep.  I can not imagine being a parent of a dying child... or maybe I can, but I don't want to.

Well, I started off with a fluffy, happy post but I sure ruined the mood with that last paragraph!  Sorry.

I hope you have a lovely day today.  Does anyone have any big plans for the week-end?

She is Beautiful!

Last night our son-in-law, Eric, wanted to surprise Maria with an evening out.  You know what that meant!  Yes!  We got to be entertained by a beautiful little girl!  I know for certain that she is beautiful because that was the first thing she told me on arrival, "I am beautiful!"   You see, as Maria was getting fancied up for her night out, Cordelia wanted to do the same.

Mental note to self: never ask a two year old to smile for a picture.

We had a fun evening.  Cordy has the sweetest manners.  She asked "please" and said "thank-you" and gave lots and lots of hugs.

Cordelia wanted to watch Strawberry Shortcake but also wanted to eat supper.  What's a grandma to do?  Easily resolved, just bring the high chair into the living room!  Oh come now, don't judge me.  The rules are different at Grandma's house!

Cordy snuggled with me for the scary part of the movie.  Yes, there are scary parts in Strawberry Shortcake movies!  She patted me saying, "Don't worry Grandma.  Everything will be ok in the end."

Grandpa came home and all was well with Cordelia's world...

... and our's.

Valentine Radicals

Happy Valentine's Day!

Is Valentine's Day a big deal for you?  I heard that question being asked on a talk show yesterday.  They were expecting the answer to be "no" for men and "yes" for women.  They were surprised when some of the women were answering that it was NOT a big deal for them.  I laughed, then, when the same women went on to say they'd be very upset if their boyfriend or husband forgot Valentine's Day.

My first reaction to that question was that Valentine's Day was not important to me at all.  I think it is the western, independent attitude in me that makes me want to reject the day.  I don't like to be told what day of the year we are supposed to celebrate our love.  On the other hand, I guess a day that reminds us to celebrate our love is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yesterday Mike and I decided to celebrate early.  How's that for independence?  We rejected the idea of trying to go out for dinner on a night when the restaurants would no doubt be full.  Instead, we decided to go out for BREAKFAST and to do it a day early.  We're radicals, I'm just saying...

Early on in our relationship I think Valentine's Day was more important to me.  Our very first one was in 1976 and I hope I am remembering it right.   Mike was in a basketball tournament in Havre, MT and I was there with the Pep Club.   I didn't see much of him, actually, as he was pretty busy.  In between basketball games he was resting at his aunt and uncle's house.  We found out later that he had mononucleosis.  Nevertheless, I received a flower from him.  I was so excited!  I'm sure it was the first time anyone sent me a flower and I loved knowing that he was thinking of me.  I hate to admit it but I am sure I also loved getting it in front of the other girls sharing the hotel room.

I also remember 1977's Valentine's Day.  Mike was going to college in Moorhead, MN and I had moved out there to be near him.  It was a bitterly cold winter and before Mike left his dorm's parking lot he'd had to squirt that stuff at the carburetor ( I think) to help get his car started.  During his efforts, a flame had flashed up at him.  He wasn't hurt, though, and he did get his car started.  When he arrived at my apartment the first thing I noticed was that the top of his head was covered with sawdust...then I noticed an awful smell!  It turns out that he'd burned the tips of his hair!  If you've never smelled burned hair, I will tell you that it is NOT a nice Valentiney smell.  I was thrilled that he'd made such an effort to take me on a date that night, though.   I tried to help him get rid of the "sawdust" from his head but I'm sure he was still a bit smelly when we went out for dinner.

All these years later, I'm still grateful for the love we share.  I am well aware that not everyone has that same blessing.  I know that not everyone has a romantic love in their lives, but who says Valentine's Day is just about the romance?  I don't know anyone who is without love in their lives, be it the love of parents, children or friends.  Best of all, we have available to us the pure love of God.

I am still not sure that Valentine's Day is a big deal to me.  It seems like it puts a lot of pressure on people.  However, love IS a big deal (if you follow that link, click on the song, It's About Love).  So I'm celebrating that!

Reunited Friends

On our recent trip to Minnesota, Mom and I took a lunch break in Sioux Falls, SD.  A friend of Mom's, Marlene, met us.  They were so happy to see each other!  I loved this photo of the two friends reunited.

When was the last time you had a sweet reunion such as this?

An Interview with AKM

Today I am introducing a reader named Angela, also known as AKM.

Angela (AKM)

I think you will enjoy getting to "know" her a bit better through her interview.  I've enjoyed her upbeat and fun personality!  Here's my interview with her...

What is your earliest memory and how old were you?
I THINK I remember the Fourth of July when I was 2 years old. I remember seeing fireworks and I distinctly remember sitting on a magenta plaid blanket we had. My mom says she doesn't remember that time specifically, but that it's definitely possible.

Tell me something about which you feel passionate.
I'm passionate about helping the disenfranchised, the marginalized, the oppressed. Jesus' best friends were these people, so that says it all to me.

Tell me something about your childhood.
I was fairly lonely as a child. I was tested and found to be gifted after I began reading early, and I never did fit in with the other children. I prayed and prayed for a little sister for years. Finally, when I was nine, I got a sibling...but it was a brother! EWW! A BOY! NOT what I ordered!

Patrick and His girlfriend, Ashley

Once I met him, though, I instantly decided that we would be lifelong best friends. And we are.

Tell me of an experience from your past that was incredible or amazing to you.
Seeing the mountains of Colorado when I was sixteen was truly incredible. What majesty created by the Father! I decided then and there that I would someday live in Colorado, and I'm still sticking with that plan. I hope to live there once I get my MSW in two years.
Tell me something that frightens you.
Driving on bridges. Snakes. Driving in the rain and/or at night. Large statues of people. Clowns. Getting into a bad car accident. (Notice a theme here?)

Tell me something you have accomplished that pleased you.
I still have a 4.0 so far in my second year (of four years) of grad school.

What was your first job for money?
I was always a babysitter as a teenager, and I was a good one. I would clean up the house as much as I could after the kids went to sleep, because I thought it would be a nice surprise for the parents. Kids loved me because I took the time to listen to them and I always had great books or movies or activities planned. My first real job was at Express, the clothing store, at Christmas my freshman year of college. It was kind of fun, and I spent every dime on Christmas presents for others and clothes for myself.

Tell me about your first experience leaving home.
I lived at home until I was 24, because I helped out so much with my brother. He was driving himself around by then and I finally decided to try the independence thing, so I moved into a small cheap apartment. I was still in college and I made $800 dollars a month working as a proofreader and receptionist at a local newspaper, and my rent was $200. I didn't have a thing, but I had tons of friends and tons of fun. It was probably the time I made the least amount of money as an adult, but it also might have been the time when I was happiest. Correlation, perhaps?!

Do you think of yourself as an organized person?  Why or why not?
I've always been peripherally organized -- I'm a secretary by trade -- but grad school has forced me to become organized to the very last detail. I plan out my budget, my work/school/practicum schedules, household chores and cooking schedules, assignment due dates, shopping lists/menus...I have to know where every penny goes and where every minute is spent. The more organized I am, the more relaxed I become.

Is your adult life different than you expected?  If yes, how so?
I always thought I would be married with children by now. I am almost 37 and single and without children, so it may never happen. I am satisfied with being a singleton, though, if that is what God has called me to be.

Is there a particular person who had great influence on you and if so who and how?
Both of my grandmothers had a big influence on me. Grandma Gerry was my mother's mother, and I get my generosity, honesty-to-a-fault, and big heart from her.

Grandma Gerry

Grandma Fran is my father's mother, and I get my wacky sense of humor mixed with a no-nonsense personality from her.

Grandma Fran with Patrick's Dog, TJ

I am also influenced by Jesus Christ (of course!), Saint Francis (animals and simplicity), Martin Luther King (social justice), and Sir Paul McCartney (music and animals).

AKM's Cat, Jackie

Tell me something about your views on spirituality.
I came back to the Catholic Church last spring after a hiatus of at least ten years. I love receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. I love how the Holy Spirit moves me and guides me. I love knowing that I have a direct line to God at any time! (How cool is that?!) I love Mother Mary and I often get teary at Advent and Christmas when I consider the love she had for her baby boy, who would one day suffer and die so that others might live in the Kingdom forever. I love the austerity of Lent leading up to the great joy of Easter. I love loving my brothers and sisters here on Earth, as well as those who have gone before me, whom I will see again one day. I love babies, born and unborn, and I am pro-life.

What do you do for a living?
I am a secretary at a university in the St. Louis area and a part-time social work grad student. I will have my MSW in two years and I then hope to head West. (If Colorado isn't an option, I'm also considering states like Montana and/or Alaska.) I may try to get a federal job and work on an Armed Forces base. (Proud Army helicopter pilot's daughter here!) I also hope to serve in the Peace Corps at some point in my life. I am also currently an Inquirer learning about the Brothers and Sisters of Charity Domestic Expression, founded by John Michael Talbot, and I am considering becoming a celibate sister -- yes, a nun! -- and living at his Little Portion Hermitage in Arkansas someday. (http://littleportion.org/home.html)

What do you currently most enjoy to do with your free time?
I love Sundays...Mass, family, friends, books, and relaxation. Sometimes I go out with friends on Friday nights and we do karaoke, which is a hoot. I'm kind of a homebody, though, so I am often at home reading, cooking, and snuggling with my cat.

Tell me something new you've recently learned.
I've been immersed in domestic/sexual violence advocate training for my practicum, which is at a domestic violence agency from now until July/August. I have become passionate about the movement and it may be my social work niche. Everyone on the planet should feel safe in his or her own home and no one deserves to be abused.

Is there something new you plan to learn?  If so, what?
I have been kinda-sorta learning Italian for a few years. I'm not very good at it unless I can read it. (For whatever reason, I am good at learning foreign languages, but only specifically at reading and writing them; speaking them becomes a challenge. I think this might be because I am very much a reader and a visual learner.)

Whether I've asked a fitting question or not, tell me anything about yourself that you wish to tell!
-- I'm kind of a foodie and all of those "acquired taste" foods, like blue cheese, anchovies, and black licorice? I love 'em, and I have from the first time I ever tried them.

-- I love coffee and tea and I must have some daily. I like all kinds of both.      -- I have never broken a bone or been stung by a bee.

-- My favorite songs are "Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen, "Tin Cup Chalice" by Jimmy Buffett, and "In My Life" by the Beatles.
-- I like tattoos, NPR, pigs, green olives, mob movies, British comedy, and Twizzlers.
-- I am the guardian of one very spoiled and very beautiful one-eyed cat named Jackie.
-- Like Pastor Mike, I am a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. I also love Kentucky basketball and Notre Dame football.

Walking Through the Tombstones

My Mom and I were in Minnesota for less than 48 hours.  We had one purpose, to support my nieces and nephew as they faced the loss of their mother.  Out of respect for their privacy I won't be talking about that except to say I was proud of them and wish we lived closer together.

When I was in 6th grade my family moved to that small town in Minnesota where my nieces and nephew later grew up.  I lived there until the end of my 9th grade year.  I loved living there!  Our home was actually a country church parsonage that sat right beside the little church as well as a little cemetery.  A small creek wound around us and a little lake was near the end of our driveway, all laced with trees.   Doesn't that sound lovely?  It really was.

As we were so limited on time we really tried to spend it all with family.  It has been nearly 39 years since we last lived out there and much has changed.  We did take a few minutes, though, to drive down the lane to the parsonage/church/cemetery where we once lived.  That little driveway still felt so very familiar.   The church itself did not look that much different, although it is no longer a church.

The parsonage was much the same, although it seemed to have shrunk a bit.  It is no longer a parsonage, though.  That propane tank used to be a place I thought of as my own.  I'd run at it on the low end and leap up as though I was landing on the back of my horse.  Perhaps I will regret sharing that particular memory.  I will also likely regret telling that I'd sometimes put my after-school bologna sandwich in my mouth when I did that leaping maneuver so that I could sit on the back of my "horse" while enjoying my sandwich.

Mom and I got out and endured a chilly wind to walk around the cemetery a bit.  It may seem kind of odd but during our years there we'd grown quite used to that cemetery.  Mom, for a time, was the person who mowed the cemetery lawn.  We found the foundation of the tombstone she'd nicked when she was mowing one day right after it had been placed.  I remember that as being a pretty mortifying day for her but it gave us both a chuckle these 40 years later.

I found the tall tombstone that used to kind of scare me.  When I'd first moved there other kids convinced me to reach up and put my finger inside a hole on the top.  They said I'd feel the hair of the lady who was buried there.  Of course I was too old to believe it but I do remember that it DID kind of feel like hair in there.

Later, during those rough junior high years, I often wandered around this little cemetery.  Many times I'd read the names on those very old stones and wonder what their lives had been like.  I came to think of that place as a peaceful sanctuary.

We found the names of people we'd known.  Some had died many years ago, while others are still alive. These kind people have  taken some of the burden from their future survivors by having their plots and tombstones all ready.  Mom commented how good these people were to plan ahead so well.

It would have been nice to drive around and visit some of the few who may still remember us but we knew our purpose.  I took a few photos of our old home and we got back  into our vehicle, protected from the cold wind of that day, while our minds were melancholy with memories of a tender time of long ago.

I would like to introduce you to Anna Leviner of Living the Leviner Life.  Anna was brave enough to volunteer to be among those interviewed for my blog.  Thank-you, Anna!

Let's begin...

What is your earliest memory and how old were you?
My earliest memory from childhood was when I was four years old. I was in a car accident with my grandmother and ended up with a broken leg. It is still a very vivid memory in my mind.

Tell me something about which you feel passionate.

Two subjects that I'm very passionate about are children's rights and animal rights. If you want to get me fired up on a topic, these would be it!

Tell me something about your childhood.
I have always had a very vivid imagination, even as a child I enjoyed writing fictional stories. I also enjoyed coming up with games for my sisters and I to play.

What was your first job for money?
I had some babysitting gigs and assisted my mom in her in-home daycare.

Is there a particular person who had great influence on you and if so who and how?
My second grade teacher had a great influence on me because she always encouraged me to keep up writing.

Tell me something about your views on spirituality.

God keeps me sane. I'm thankful for His presence and love in my life.

If you are married, tell about first meeting your spouse.  Was it love at first sight or did it cook up more slowly?
I first met my husband at my high school alma mater's football game. We met through a mutual friend and enjoyed talking with one another, but I was sure I would never see him again. He made it a point to see me again and the rest is history. :)

Tell me something about your time as an adolescent.
Most of what I remember about being a teen was constantly wanting to fit in. It was a time in my life that I'm happy I don't have to relive. I think I was the least like myself, that I could be. If that makes sense.

What do you currently most enjoy to do with your free time?  Blogging, reading, writing, spending time with my husband and family.

Is there something new you plan to learn?  If so, what?
I would love to learn how to sew.

Thanks, Anna!  I appreciate that you took the time to do this for me.   Also, thank you for all your sweet comments that you've left on my blog over the last months.  I really appreciate it!

Remember, you can get to know Anna even better by checking out her blog, Living the Leviner Life.   Her blog features product reviews, giveaways, recipes, thrifty tips and lots more!

My thanks to Anna and to all who have volunteered to be interviewed.  This is kind of fun so if you've not already done so, send me your information.  It is not too late to volunteer, just check out the instructions here.  I will be posting the interviews as they are available.  Thanks!

Confession

Well, you've probably figured out that before I left home I quickly put together a few days' worth of posts.  I only had my tablet a few hours and had no confidence that I would know how to post from it.  My laptop is not really portable since I can't close it.

So, there you have it.  That's my blogging confession.  I will be home soon and do it up right!

Thank-you for stopping by. Feel free to use my photos but please link them back to my blog. I am honored if you wish to share content of any of my posts on Facebook, Twitter, etc. as long as it is linked back to my blog.

New Toy

I received this ...

for my birthday last week!

I am trying to figure it out while I am on my trip.  I'm sorry that I'm not getting the interviews published but when I get home to my familiar laptop I will get it all done up.  I've got a bit of a learning curve to navigate but I'm sure I'm going to love blogging from my tablet... eventually!

Thank-you for stopping by. Feel free to use my photos but please link them back to my blog. I am honored if you wish to share content of any of my posts on Facebook, Twitter, etc. as long as it is linked back to my blog.

Ginger

We received the news yesterday morning that my brother's former wife was killed in a motor vehicle accident Thursday evening.  I haven't been around her much for quite a few years but she was mother to my nieces, Sarah, Rachel and Elisabeth, as well as my nephew, Matthew.  I am picking up my mother today and heading to Minnesota to be with them.  I can not imagine the pain her children are enduring at this time.

I have no great comfort to offer my nieces and my nephew.  I do not have words of wisdom for them.  What I do have are memories to share with them.  I met their mother when we were both in junior high school.  I can remind them how pretty she was.  I can talk about how generous she was with her talents.  I believe Maria still has the quilt Ginger made for her when she was born.  I can talk about her quiet smile.  I can reflect on her skills as a cook.  I remember what a hard worker she was.

Ginger's kids know all these things, though.  I think mostly I will just listen to them talk; they knew her better than any of us did.  Their loss is deep.  All I really have to offer is a sense of caring.  Mom and I go representing the rest of the family that can't be there.  We will go to let Ginger's children and grandchilren know that we remember her and that we are so very sorry for their loss.

The Floral Rhino

This week Maria and I delivered our first order to a store.  It was an awesome feeling!

It was Maria's idea to approach the owner of a new store in town, asking if she'd be interested in some of the items we make for our Wyoming Rose Boutique.  We took in some samples and she was very interested.  In fact, she placed an order for 30 items from us, which we delivered Monday.

If you are local, please check out the Floral Rhino (cool name, huh).  It is on Center Street, just a bit South of the theater.  It is a very fun shop!  She already has a lot of interesting things in there and it is great fun even if you are just browsing.  She has jewelry, bags, cards, purses, pillows, camera cases, scarves and much more.  I saw a book titled, I Was a Great Mom Until I Had Kids.  Plus, now she has some things such as this

and this

She is also carrying pins (broaches) and hair clips that Maria sculpted from polymer clay.  They are beautiful works of art!

I browsed around and found a fun little purchase.  I'd been wanting to get a special plate for Cordelia to use when she is at our house and I found just the thing...

So, if you live nearby and want a uniquely cool place to look for gifts or something special for yourself, stop in and tell her Wyoming Rose sent you!  If you don't live nearby, of course, you are always welcome to click on any one of the photos in the top right corner of this blog and it will zip you right to our online shop.  Browsers are welcome there as well!
